AC Not Working? Here’s What to Check Before You Call a Tech

You walk into the house. It’s stuffy.
You lower the thermostat. Nothing happens.
Now you’re sweating—and maybe a little panicked.

Before you assume the worst (or book an expensive repair), take a deep breath.
There are a few simple things you can check that might save you time, money, and a service call.

Start with the Thermostat

Sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how often this is the issue.

  • Make sure it’s set to “cool”

  • Double-check the temperature setting (not just the mode)

  • If your screen is blank, it might just need new batteries

  • Still nothing? Try resetting the breaker connected to the thermostat or HVAC system

Smart thermostats can glitch too—especially after a power outage.

Look at the Filter

If your filter is overdue for a change, your system might be suffocating.
Literally.

A dirty filter restricts airflow, which can make your system overheat, shut off, or freeze up.

  • Pop it out.

  • Hold it up to the light.

  • Can’t see through it? Time to swap it.

Check the Breaker Box

Still not turning on?

Head to your electrical panel and look for the switch labeled AC or Cooling.

  • If it’s flipped off or sitting in a middle position, reset it by flipping it fully off, then back on.

  • If it immediately trips again, that’s a red flag—don’t keep flipping it. Call a licensed tech.

Take a Peek Outside

Go to your outdoor condenser unit (usually in the side yard or back).

  • Is the fan spinning?

  • Do you hear any buzzing or clicking?

  • Are there leaves, vines, or dirt crowding it?

Clear away anything blocking airflow. Your AC needs breathing room to do its job

Notice Any Ice or Water?

Ice on the lines or puddles around the unit usually mean there’s a bigger issue.

  • Low refrigerant

  • Blocked airflow

  • Drainage problems

If you see frost or water, turn the system off and call us. You’ll avoid bigger damage by acting early.
